New halal scheme aims to boost UK lamb exports

A new UK Pre-Stun Halal Export Accreditation Scheme is being developed by the British Meat Processors Association (BMPA), which it hopes will open new markets for UK sheepmeat exporters.

The industry-led scheme, which will be operated by the BMPA and accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS), is being developed in consultation with industry representatives and government.

Based largely on New Zealand’s long-established system, the scheme will independently verify compliance with recognised international pre-stun halal export standards, aiming to give overseas buyers greater confidence in UK production systems.

Eligible sheep processing sites will be able to display a dedicated UK Halal Export Accreditation Scheme mark, helping demonstrate compliance with export requirements for those seeking access to international halal markets.

The BMPA believes the initiative will improve the competitiveness of UK sheepmeat exports, create new trading opportunities for processors, and provide benefits throughout the wider sheep supply chain.

An industry steering and oversight group will be established to guide the scheme’s development and ensure broad industry involvement.

Unlocking export opportunities

BMPA chief executive John Powell said: “By providing a clear, independently accredited framework, it will help businesses access valuable export markets while giving customers confidence in the integrity and standards behind British production.”

Animal welfare minister Baroness Hayman said the scheme would reinforce confidence in UK production standards overseas.

“This new UK pre-stun Halal Export Accreditation Scheme represents an important step in helping our sheepmeat sector access new international markets, and will support our exporters in securing valuable new opportunities, while maintaining our high standards of animal welfare,” she said.

The BMPA has previously developed a number of industry assurance programmes.

These include the BMPA Quality Pork Charter, covering animal welfare, food safety, provenance and traceability, as well as the Climate Change Agreements scheme, which supports meat processors in improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.
