Waitrose pledges 100% free-range British pork by 2027

Waitrose has announced a commitment to selling only 100% free-range own-label British pork by 2027, in partnership with Pilgrim’s Europe and UK pig farmers.

From 15 October 2025, all Waitrose pork mince, chops, steaks and joints will be sourced from free-range farms in stores and online, with all other own-label products to follow by 2027.

This long-term move supports British agriculture through a new 10-year agreement with Pilgrim’s Europe.

“Waitrose is investing in British pig farming over the next decade, ensuring top-tier animal welfare standards and delivering tasty, high-quality pork at great value,” said Charlotte Di Cello, chief commercial officer at Waitrose.

All new products will feature tiered welfare labelling to help consumers make informed choices.

Waitrose is also calling for clearer labelling laws, including a legal definition of “free range pork”.

Head of agriculture for Waitrose Jake Pickering said: “We’re proud to work with dedicated British farmers who share our passion for animal welfare.

“These farmers are the heart of our business, and we’re committed to supporting them in delivering exceptional pork.”

Waitrose already supplies 55% of the UK’s free-range pork and aims to phase out all indoor production in its own-label range by 2027.
