McCain launches potato scholarship

McCain Foods has launched a new scholarship scheme for students at Askham Bryan College, York, who are studying degrees in any subject relating to potato production or processing.

As part of the sponsorship McCain is offering up to ÂŁ5000 towards tuition and study costs, plus the chance of work placements, for research into potato farming, growing or processing. After graduation, there will be the opportunity of employment with the company.

The sponsorship will be awarded to one student in September 2009 and a second student in September 2010. It is hoped the scheme will continue beyond that.

John Ditch, director of Higher Education at Askham Bryan, said: “The scholarships add a new dimension for our students, not least the chance to have direct contact with a leading company in the industry, but also the prospect of full-time employment. This in itself is a huge benefit, particularly in these difficult financial times.

“The College is keen to increase its links with industry and, hopefully, our relationship with McCain Foods will lead to other opportunities which will be of benefit not only to students, but also to the agricultural sector as a whole.”

McCain’s CEO Nick Vermont hoped the scholarship endowments would encourage the next generation of British farmers to pursue a career in agriculture.
