New gangmaster law comes into effect

Gangmasters who operate without a licence face an unlimited fine and up to 10 years in prison after a new law comes into effect this Sunday (1 October).

Only 936 of Britain’s estimated 2000 gangmasters have applied for a licence from the Gangmasters Licensing Authority.

DEFRA believes the rest will either stop working or continue to operate illegally.
