Last chance for NI farmers to join soil health scheme

Co Antrim farmers and unregistered farm businesses across Northern Ireland are being urged to seize their final chance to join the Soil Nutrient Health Scheme (SNHS), with registration for the fourth and final phase opening on 16 June 2025.

Daera minister Andrew Muir MLA made the announcement during a visit to the Balmoral Show on 17 May, emphasising the importance of enrolling in the scheme before the deadline on 1 September 2025.

“This is the final opportunity for farmers in Zone 4 – which covers County Antrim – and any remaining unregistered farm businesses in other counties to benefit from this important initiative,” Mr Muir said.

“Over 90% of farms in Zones 1 to 3 are already taking part, and I strongly encourage the remainder to register. Participation will also be a condition for receiving the new Farm Sustainability Payment from January 2026.”

The SNHS provides farmers with detailed soil analysis, including nutrient levels, carbon storage estimates, and runoff risk maps, to support more efficient and sustainable nutrient management.

All soil samples are collected free of charge, and training is provided through the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) to help farmers interpret their results and create nutrient management plans.

Farmers can register via Daera’s online services using their Government Gateway account, visit their local Daera office, or authorise an agent to apply on their behalf.

Those eligible will be contacted by the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute  ahead of the registration period.

Minister Muir stressed that soil samples taken outside the scheme will not meet the requirements for future support schemes.

More information and step-by-step registration guidance can be found on the Daera and AFBI websites.
