Pigmeat values holding up

Pigmeat values are holding their own at a time of seasonal decline, as firm European prices keep cheap imports at bay.

The deadweight average prig price rose again last week to 108.3p/kg, compared with 105.7p/kg a year ago.

This has influenced the spot market, with bacon buyers opening trading on Friday, 11 August, at 114p/kg.

A drop in numbers has helped cull sow prices improve, with the majority traded above 80p/kg deadweight.

Meanwhile, Meat and Livestock Commission average weaner prices remain static at just over ÂŁ34/head.

The euro has weakened slightly against sterling and opened on Monday, 14 August, at 67.3p.
