We need cost talks – unions
NFU Scotland and other UK farming unions have told DEFRA that they want direct talks with ministers on proposals for sharing the costs of animal health and welfare policies.
During the Royal Highland Show (22 June), NFUS warned DEFRA against trying to impose a disease levy on the industry without giving industry a far greater say in policy in return.
At a meeting on Wednesday (27 June), industry representatives reiterated that discussions could not continue unless ministers committed in forthcoming legislation to either establishing a joint industry/government policy making body or delaying cost-sharing proposals until such moves to share responsibility came about. A meeting with ministers is expected to take place next month.
