World’s largest dairy to be built near London

Arla Foods has today (16 November) unveiled plans to build the world’s largest fresh milk dairy.

The new facility on the outskirts of London will process one billion litres of liquid milk – about twice the amount of its flagship Stourton dairy in Leeds – and is due to be operational by 2012.

Arla says it will create around 500 new jobs and will be the “largest and most technologically advanced of its kind in the world”, featuring “world-class environmental credentials”.

“The project has now started and we are currently finalising the land search,” Arla chief executive Peter Lauritzen said. “Detailed plans will be presented to the Arla Foods amba board in early 2010.

“Arla is totally committed to a long-term sustainable future in the UK and the construction of the new dairy demonstrates that commitment.”
