Young farmers could win a farm for a year
The National Trust and Wales YFC have launched a competition offering one young farmer the chance to live on and manage a 243ha (600-acre) upland farm in Snowdonia for a year.
The lucky winner of the scholarship will be responsible for day-to-day management decisions at Llyndy Isaf farm on the shores of Llyn Dinas near Beddgelert, although will be able to call on guidance and support from the YFC and Trust’s team.
From 1 September, they will have responsibility for managing all aspects of running the farm for 12 months, including stock management, practical work and form filling.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for a young farmer to experience what it is like to run an upland farm,” said Trystan Edwards, the National Trust’s general manager for Snowdonia and LlÅ·n.
“This initiative will ensure that the successful candidate can build their confidence and develop their skills in stock management, business, and practical management through formal and informal training as well as work experience.”
The competition is only open to members of Wales YFC aged 18-26 and the closing date for applications is 26 April 2013. Two open days for prospective applicants will be held at Llyndy Isaf on 6 and 20 April.
After an interview process, the successful candidate will be announced during the 2013 Royal Welsh Show.
