Watch the first episode of Farmers Apprentice 2016

Over the next six weeks, you can watch our 10 young farming hopefuls battle it out for the title of Farmers Apprentice 2016.

The first episode is available today (see below) and each new episode will be released on consecutive Fridays on the Farmers Weekly website, culminating in the final episode and the announcement of the winner on 4 November.

In the first episode, the 10 apprentices settle in at Bishop Burton College, and meet each other and the judges ready for their hectic week of farming challenges.

The ultimate aim? Winning the chance of a one-year trainee assistant farm manager apprenticeship with professional grower business Farmcare – worth £25,000.

During a 12-month apprenticeship, the winner will be thrown into a diverse role that will draw on the range of skills required to be a modern British farmer: communication, teamwork, adapting to change, creativity and tenacity, to name a few.

So throughout the week we pushed all 10 of our young apprentices to hone and apply these skills to the each day’s new task, with lots of late nights and early starts along the way.

Farmers Weekly and its sponsors understand what a competitive industry farming can be to get into, and what a challenging sector it can be to work in.

With those challenges come big responsibilities – not least producing the nation’s food – but also big rewards: being your own boss, the chance to work outside in some of Britain’s most beautiful locations and the fantastic people.

Farmers Apprentice aims to kick-start young people’s careers in farming, while also showing what a dynamic and rewarding industry UK agriculture can be.
