Cereals 2019: Smaller Defender joins Chafer’s self-propelled lineup

Chafer has decided the time is right to expand the lower reaches of its sprayer range, with a new self-propelled model that offers a smaller tank, narrower booms and a cheaper price than the existing Interceptor.
The company hopes it will find favour with those looking to upgrade from Agribuggy-sized machines to something with a bit more capacity and the option of plenty of technology.
So, while the big Interceptor offers 4,000- and 5,000-litre stainless steel tanks, buyers of the new Defender will have to settle for a 3,000- or 3,500-litre tank and F-series booms that top out with the 30m triple-folds.

It’s roughly one tonne lighter (at 9t) and 30cm shorter (3.3m wheelbase) than its bigger brother, but still employs most of the same hardware.
That includes the Bosch Rexroth hydrostatic transmission, New Holland forage harvester cab and Deutz engine.
However, the six-cylinder motor has been detuned to kick out just 180hp, which is 60hp shy of the Interceptor’s maximum.
The centrifugal pump provides filling speeds up to 850 litres/min and Chafer expects customers to raid the options list for guidance, section control, boom levelling and more sophisticated plumbing.
A 3,000-litre, 24m boom version specced with with auto section control, guidance and two sets of wheels has a £174,000 list price.
