Photo of the Week: Belgian Blue stands out from the crowd
This week’s photo of a 12-day-old Belgian Blue-sired calf was sent in by Aisling Cooney in County Tipperary in the Republic of Ireland.
The family farm has a herd of Friesian, Friesian-cross, and some Montbeliarde-cross cows and they milk approximately 160 dairy cows on 180 acres.

This little bull calf caught Aisling’s eye because of his unusual markings.
“I took the original photo shortly after he was born because I was completely taken by him — his markings were so unusual and striking that he really stood out from the rest of the calves,” she says.
“As he’s settled in, his markings have become even more distinctive, particularly along his back, which is something I’ve never seen before in a Belgian Blue-sired calf.”
Aisling works on the farm, which was started by her grandfather and is now run by her dad. She is 18 years old and will take over the farm one day.
She’s certainly packing in the experience – particularly in a busy calving season.
