Four live calves born in potential Galloway first

A pedigree Galloway cow has given birth unassisted to four live calves in what could be a first for the historic breed.

Political of Balgray delivered three bull calves and a heifer outdoors on 1 September, with all four reported to be strong and doing well.

Quadruplet births are exceptionally rare in cattle, and the Galloway Cattle Society said it was unaware of another recorded case involving four live calves born to a pedigree Galloway.

It is now asking breeders in the UK and overseas for documented evidence of any previous cases before declaring a breed first.

The naturally conceived calves were also something of a surprise.

The dam was given just one opportunity with the bull during a 48-hour period and was not subsequently seen to return.

She was later halter trained and shown throughout the summer with her previous heifer calf at foot, including taking second place in the cow class at the 2026 Royal Highland Show.

Despite carrying quadruplets, she calved outside without assistance.

Political, by Troloss Impeccable and out of Penninghame Union, was bred in the Balgray herd and sold for 6,000gns at its dispersal sale in October 2025 to Dexter and Carolyn Logan.

Potential breed first

Galloway Cattle Society secretary Dorothy Goldie said four live, naturally conceived calves from one Galloway cow is quite extraordinary.

“We are not aware of another recorded case, but before claiming a breed first we would love to hear from Galloway breeders around the world who may know otherwise.”

The timing, Ms Goldie said, makes it “even more special” as the Galloway Cattle Society celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2027.

“After almost a century and a half of recording and promoting the breed, it would be remarkable to have a potential breed first on the eve of such an important milestone,” she added.
