Sheep sale raises £3,100 for farmer’s cancer charity run

A Texel ewe was sold seven times at the same auction to raise money for a charity runner.

Staffordshire farmer Katie-Alice Healey is running the London Marathon on Sunday 21 April to raise funds for the charity Children with Cancer UK.

To boost her fundraising bid, Mrs Healey and her husband Andrew donated a ewe and a ewe hogg for a charity auction at Bakewell Market, Bagshaws, on 8 April. Auctioneer Peter Oven oversaw the bidding process, supported by Mark Elliott.

The Texel-cross ewe hogg was sold to a local businessman, Bill Clarke of DME Tyres, Burntwood, who gifted the animal back to the Healeys’ 10-year-old son Joseph for breeding.

The barren Texel ewe was eventually sold seven times over, starting with the highest bid, £520, from John Dixon of Gentleshaw, Rugeley, who put the ewe back up for resale. 

The sales eventually raised £3,100 for the cancer charity.

Mrs Healey said the amount raised was a “nice surprise” and 10 times what they had expected.
