12,500gns top call for Carlisle Beltex

A 12,5000gns bid marked a marathon two-day sale of over 1300 Beltex sheep at Carlisle – the biggest number of sheep the Beltex Sheep Society has ever offered at its main fixture.

The bid came on the evening of the first day when the sale kicked off with the entry of ram lambs. And it was Woodies Snoop Dog from S Wood’s flock at Westhill, Aberdeenshire – the reserve overall champion – that produced a spate of determined bidding from several leading breeders.

By the 8000gns Kingledores Rascal, the lamb stood 2nd out of a class of 54 at the Royal Highland Show. He goes to Gavin Shanks’ flock at Carluke.

With two rings on the go on Friday for the sale of shearling rams it kept buyers on their toes throughout the day, but a buying partnership from Scotland held off the competition to claim the shearling tup Ryder Rooney from Brian Ryder’s flock at Moffat, Dumfriesshire at the day’s best of 10,000gns.

By the 3500gns ram Glantre Norris and out of Tullygarley Jo Jo – a Ulysses daughter – Rooney returned north of the border with buyers R E Wood, Biggar and S Wood, Westhill.

Close up at 9000gns was Glantre Royce, an Airyolland Loyalty son who is full brother to Glantre Norris. He was the best from the pen of Ceredigion-based breeder Michael Owens and was taken by H Jewitt, Barnard Castle.

A 7000gns bid from G E Slater, Cheshire secured S Wood’s Howcommon Romeo. The ram was bred by J Cousar and is by Heatheryhall Poker face.

Mr Woods enjoyed a good day when minutes before he sold another shearling at 5800gns. Also bought as a ram lamb, Drumchapel Replay was bred by the Firm of A and J Alston and is by Wonderboy. Buyers were J and S Wilkinson, Richmond, north Yorkshire.

Ardstewart Sherlock, a Broughton Pound Stretcher son and out of ewe by Ardstewart King of Speads, made 5000gns. Consigned by Wade and Alison McCrabbe, Co Donegal, he was bought by G and S Sinclair, Castle Douglas and S and W McCormack, Peebleshire.

The overall championship went to the shearling ewe Whatmore Ruby from mid-Wales breeder S A Gibbons. By Woodies Perfection she was inter-breed champion at this year’s Three Counties Show. She made 7000gns to R Hudson, Plumtree, Nottinghamshire.

Averages: 135 ram lambs £655 and 205 gimmers £978. Shearling tup averages to follow.
