Ridgemere Tyrone took the top price of 6,200gns
The South Devon Midland Club Sale at Stratford saw a buoyant trade for both bulls and heifers, with new buyers looking to capitalise on quality and high health status.
A new record price was set at this venue for heifers, which peaked at 4,600 guineas and saw the average price for 2-year olds rise by £632.
Judge Mr Robert Shinner from Stretchford, Buckfastleigh, Devon, picked his male champion (below) from Richard Ford’s Goffe Cave herd from Leicestershire – Goffe Cave Sturdy 12.
His sire Trevassack Trusty 4 was a previous best bull in the Society’s national Herd Competition. Reserve male champion was another Leicestershire bull, Ridgemere Tyrone from D & B Bowley, sired by Grove Wellington 51.
In the female judging, champion was A E J & F J Claridge’s Knowlhill Melise 44, sired by Sexton Excalibur 7 and out of a homebred cow.
She went on to be chosen as Reserve Breed Champion behind Champion Goffe Cave Sturdy 12 and sold for 4,600gns.
In the sale ring Ridgemere Tyrone took the top price of 6,200 guineas selling to S Dewick from Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire. The champion, Goffe Cave Sturdy 12 was next highest price at 4,800 guineas, selling to another Leicestershire breeder G P Hubbard & Sons from Lutterworth; and followed by Julian White’s Broadwood Prospect who sold to Mrs J Archer from Norfolk for 4,100 guineas.
There was a total clearance of bulls, with 11 averaging £3,160.
The lively trade for females was led by the female champion who broke the South Devon heifer record for this venue at 4,600 guineas, selling to A & C Vrona from Rutland. Next highest price for 2 year olds was from a consignment from J G Williams & Son, Craven Arms, Shropshire – Hopton Hilda 35, by Sexton Excalibur 19, who sold to D Holt from Hertfordshire for 2,750 guineas. A further four out of sixteen 2 year olds exceeded 2,000 guineas.
Maiden heifers born in 2011 were led by M & S Kettlewell’s Upper Norton Naomi, by Welland Valley Hanbury 11, who sold to I Howard from Ashbourne, Derbyshire for 2,250 guineas.
Averages: 11 bulls, average £3,160. 16 halter broken bulling heifers, average £2,090. 11 halter broken maiden heifers, average £1,227.
