Beanhill herd takes top call at Welshpool Charolais sale
Charolais bulls met a strong demand at Welshpool last week (Thursday 4 February), topping at 5,000gns.
Altogether 21 bulls sold to an average of £3,450, representing a clearance rate of 75%.
Society chief executive David Benson said: “Considering that the single farm payment has not yet been received by the majority of farmers, there was a ready demand for Charolais bulls.”
Sale leader was Beanhill Jamaica TI +58 SRI +57 from James and Belinda Kimber, Chippenham, Wiltshire. This 18-month-old Blelack Digger son was purchased for 5,000gns by BA Williams, Anglesey, Gwynedd.
The Kimber’s also sold their reserve champion Beanhill Jack, for the day’s second highest price of 4,800gns to Messrs Harding, Caersws, Powys. The June-2014 born Jack is sired by Alwent Goldbar and took the junior championship at the Three Counties Show last year.
From the same vendor was another Goldbar son, the 18-month-old Beanhill Jupiter, who was previously crowned reserve junior champion at the Three Counties Show. He was purchased by Messrs Sargent and Waight, Pewsey, Wiltshire for 3,400gns.
Next selling for 4,000gns to JP Breeze and Son, Knighton, Powys, was Moelfre Jace, a 17-month-old son of the 16,000gns Royal Welsh reserve male champion Anside Foreman. He was exhibited by Kevin Thomas, Castlenewydd Emlyn, Carmarthenshire.
From the same vendor was the second prize-winner Moelfre Jamil by Anside Foreman, who was purchased for 3,400gns by JL Jones and Partners, Knighton, Powys.
The September-2014 born Dawson Jack TI +62 SRI +59 sired by Goldies Eddy from Rachel Dawson, Newton Burgoland, Leicestershire, was knocked down for 3,800gns to DN Cook, Leicestershire.
The 14-month-old Lindford Jacko TI +70 SRI +66 also took the eye of Mr Cook, who purchased this Blelack Digger son for 3,000gns from Alan Platt, Shrewsbury, Shropshire.
Four bulls sold for 3,500gns.
The first was the 20-month-old class winner Lindford Jamie by Cottage Devon. He sold to JE and SI Morgan, Wells, Powys.
Richard and Alison Tucker offered the next, Gower Juggler. This May-2014 born Alwent Goldbar son was snapped up by CJ Jones, Rhayader, Powys.
Last, the 19-month-old Maerdy Julep by Maerdy Dynamite was purchased by A and B Lewis, Machynlleth, Powys from Esmor Evans, Mold, Flintshire.
The supreme champion sold for 3,200gns to the Thomas brothers, Llanfylin, Powys. This was the 16-month-old Wissington Highflyer son Wissington Jason exhibited by John and Jenny Rix, Colchester, Essex.
