Scots demand answers on Brazilian beef

The Scottish Beef Cattle Association wrote this week to EU commissioner Markos Kyprianou to demand an explanation for the EU’s failure to commit to a ban on Brazilian beef imports.

The association also calls for a fresh inspection of Brazilian standards.

In the letter, the SBCA expresses “deep concern” that the Commission persistently refuses to act despite recent reports from the Food and Beverage Office regarding food production in Brazil.

“In our view their reports are damning of the Brazilian farms – the EU would not tolerate such conditions on EU farms.

“Their most recent report highlighted considerable failings in the systems in Brazil and inaction since 2003, yet we still continue to allow imports of beef,” said Keith Redpath, SBCA technical director.
