Brijon flock leads in-lamb gimmer sale at Borderway
A consignment of in-lamb gimmers from the Brijon and Maerdy Texel flocks peaked at 3,500gns when they went under the hammer at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, this week (11 Jan).
Leading the sale with a 3,500gns bid was Messrs Redhead and Watson’s Brijon flock, Bowsden, Berwick-upon-Tweed, with their March 2014-born gimmer REW1404321, sired by Brackenridge Strongbow and out of a Caereinion Regis dam. She sold to J Winter, Appleby-in-Westmorland, Cumbria, having been served to Midlock Unique.
Next best at 2,600gns was the very first lot to go under the hammer, Brijon REW1404331. This gimmer was sired by the same ram as the top-priced lot but was bred from a College Oz dam. She was also served to Midlock Unique in October and headed home to Penrith with A Hambleton.
The consignment from DE Evans’ Maerdy flock, Mold, Flintshire, topped at 320gns twice.
First to make this money was a gimmer bred the same way as the top priced lot. She sold to Callum Wight, Biggar, Lanarkshire, having been served to Scolton Vanquish before running with Baltier Watchman.
At the same money was a Sportsmans Trojan II daughter out of a Sportsman Supreme dam. This one sold to G Gray, Lindean, Selkirk.
Borderway Leicester sale
On the same day the Border Leicester Society’s special show and sale of MV accredited in-lamb ewes realised a top of 800gns.
Sale leader was the reserve champion, a hogg from Mary Laidlaw, Galston, Ayrshire. Her champion was sired by Lammermuir Ledger and is out of a dam by Walton Wildcard. She was snapped up by M Prince, Chesterfield, Derbyshire.
The day’s overall champion, the 2013 RHS champion Didcot Drambuie sired gimmer from S and A Watson, Muthill, Crieff, made 700gns when selling to A Gardiner, Biggar, Lanarkshire. She sold in lamb to Eildon Rob Roy.
Averages: 56 Brijon gimmers, £811.13; 16 Maerdy gimmers, £252.66; 19 Border Leicester in-lamb ewes, £408.95.
