Dairy heifers top £2,500 at Gisburn

Dairy heifers realised a top price of £2,500 at Gisburn Auction Marts pedigree show and sale.

Sale leader was Poulton le Fylde’s James and Anne Singleton’s pre-sale champion and Shotgun daughter, who is currently giving 38 litres. She was knocked down to RT Halhead, Cockerham, Lancaster.

Next best at £2,450 was a Landino Park Talent heifer from Colin Singleton, Goosnargh, Preston. She sold to David Talbot, Ribchester, Preston, giving 41kgs a day.

The same vendor achieved  £2,350 for a Heather Holme Velvet sired heifer, calved three weeks and giving 35kgs. She sold to Doug Graves, Armathwaite, Carlisle.

 

At £2,300 was a Magor Bolivia Allen sired heifer, which sold to Wick Williams, Nantwich, Cheshire.

Regular vendor Lee Donkin, Copster Green, Blackburn, sold his Gen-Mark Stmatic Sanchez sired heifer just ten days calved and giving 30 litres for £2,350 to Chris Newsam, Preston.

Fred Spurgeon, dairy auctioneer, commented “It was clear today, that dairy buyers wanted milk and this was clearly reflected in the sale prices with 14 heifers selling for £2,000 or more – trade could only be described as excellent.”

In the commercial section Peter Smith, Burnley and David Graveston, Bolton by Bowland, Clitheroe showed some smart heifers and achieved £2,200 and £2,100.  Surprise of the day came from a newly calved Shorthorn heifer from Messrs Throup, Bradley, Keighley, which sold to Chris Harrison, Elslack, Skipton at £1,720.

In-calf cows sold to £1450 and in calf heifers to £1,660.  Heifer calves from Raymond and Robert Johnson, Felliscliffe, Harrogate, sold to £390 and a group of spring born Friesian stirks from Dumfries, Scotland sold to £600.
