Pneumonia in calves is estimated to cost dairy and beef farmers about £80m a year, and where it takes hold on a farm, it can cost more than £40 for each reared calf.
In addition, bovine respiratory disease can also impair future milk yields from affected heifers. It is a real challenge given the damp climate in the UK, which is ideal for respiratory diseases, particularly when animals are housed in winter.
