Demand at Kington for meated hoggets
McCartney’s of Kington reported a good entry of 2,136 sheep at last week’s sale.
More than 1,800 hogget’s were forward which sold to a good trade on the week, but slightly easier than the previous weeks trade. The supply of hoggets has increased over the past week due to the better trade. There is a significant difference in the trade between well meated and half meated hoggets and auctioneers say it is well worth selecting the hoggets which are well meated. Demand has remained steady but numbers in the last week has caught up with demand.
Demand was good for all weights and meated lambs sold to a significant premium.
The top price hogget’s were ÂŁ98.50 a head for some 55kg hogget’s from B and M Chilman.
All the hogget’s at Kington averaged 1.99p/kg up to 2.12p/kg.
Hogget’s between 32kg and 39kg averaged 1.90p/kg up to 1.95p/kg
Hogget’s between 39.5kg and 45.5kg averaged 2.02p/kg up to 2.12p/kg
Hogget’s between 46kg and 52kg averaged 1.88p/kg up to 1.95p/kg
Hogget’s over 52kg averaged 1.80p/kg up to 1.85p/kg
Some 39kg hogget’s from T Hughes and Sons made ÂŁ73, 40kg hogget’s from J E Griffiths and Sons made ÂŁ82.80, 41kg hogget’s from A M and G J Probert made ÂŁ85.70, 42kg hogget’s from W H Lyke made ÂŁ87, 43kg hogget’s from W H Lyke made ÂŁ88, 45kg hogget’s from B and E Hammond made ÂŁ90, 49kg hogget’s from T I and G M Edmunds made ÂŁ94.50, 50kg hoggets from W D Layton and Sons made ÂŁ92.80, 53kg hogget’s from W H Lyke made ÂŁ96.20, 56kg hogget’s from C M and W C Philip made ÂŁ98.50
There was a better entry of 336 cull ewes selling to a level trade on the week. Again same as the hoggets well meated ewes sold to a significant premium. Smaller hill type ewes were a good trade for the export market as long as they were meated.
The ewes sold to a top of ÂŁ99 for some Suffolk x ewes from D R and M G Williams and all the ewes averaged ÂŁ62 a head with many hill and thin ewes forward. Tups and weathers sold to ÂŁ81 and averaged ÂŁ68. The cull ewes included a large proportion of thinner mule ewes and smaller hill ewes.
