Devon cattle sell to 4,000gns at Sedgemoor
Red Ruby Devon cattle sold to 4000gns twice at the breed society’s show at sale at Sedgemoor Auction Centre last week (March 13).
The average for males was up £400 on the year, with strong demand ensuring seven bulls sold to a solid average of 3,044gns.
Taking the day’s joint top price of 4,000gns was the pre-sale champion Stonegrove Nutcracker from Stonegrove Livestock, Shrawley, Worcester.
This June 2012 born bull is sired by Bollowal Elgar, who claimed the reserve native breed rosette at the Royal Three Counties Show last year, and is out of the homebred dam Stonegrove Hatton 8th.
He was purchased by Juston Goad, Wellington, Somerset.
At the same money was the reserve champion Whitefield Mark My Word from Heywood and Hurd, Taunton, Somerset.
Sired by Lee Manor Campaigner he is out of Whitefield Brides-maid 59th, which is sired by the Devon Cattle Breeder’s Society Bull of the Year Whitefield Centurion. He was purchased by John May from Crediton, Devon.
Sharing the journey home to Crediton with Campaigner was the first-prize, homebred bull Boskenna Donal from GM and JA Hosking, Penzance, Cornwall, at 3,100gns.
Sired by the Glebe Universe 3rd son Yeomadon Ferdinand he is out of the Thorndale Assirati son Boskenna Donna 2nd.
Making 3,600gns was Colleton Maximus from Simon and Grania Phillips, Chulmleigh, Devon.
Sired by Colleton Jack he is out of the Efford Down Billy-Wizz daughter Colleton Aude 2nd. Buyer was Messrs Waygood and Son of Rock Farm, Taunton.
Messrs Dart & Son’s Champson Goliath, from South Molton, Devon, sold for 3,200gns to Robin Haddy, Boscastle, Cornwall. Sired by Efford Down Grenadier he is out of a homebred dam.
Females
Topping the female section was the champion heifer Ashway Mary 15th who sold in calf to Pamela Idelson-Smith, Bude, Cornwall for 2,850gns.
Top price achieved for maiden heifers was 1,400gns for Philip Huxtable’s Barton Camelia 243rd sold to Mr J Thorne or Barnstaple Devon, and Margaret Elliott’s Cutcombe Severn 27th. Sired by Champson Jasper she is out of a homebred dam. She sold for 1,400gns to P Richards of Melbury Bubb, Dorset.
Averages: 13 bulls, 3,044gns; seven in-calf heifers, 2020gns; 45 maiden heifers, 830gns.
