Devons demand pushes prices to £4200 high

Small numbers and keen bidders at the Devon Cattle Breeders’ Society’s Autumn Show and Sale held at Sedgemoor Market, saw the Champion bull Stonegrove Larkspur, a Jan 2010 son of Stonegrove Fearless bred by Stonegrove Livestock Shrawley Worcs sell at £4200 to M and D Cowell Ashreigney Devon to join their Eastyard herd. This animal is the DCBS Young Bull of the Year 2011 having won many rosettes and cups through the summer shows. His sire was Young Bull of the Year 2005.

DCBS Autumn 2011 Champion.JPGresize.JPGReserve Champion, the only polled bull, went to Hansnett Maurice bred by Sue Farquhar Ledbury. He met keen bidding with 4 hands in the air at one point eventually being knocked down at £3675 to Messrs White Axminster Devon for their Dalwood herd.

The female section saw similar activity with T S Griffiths travelling from Hereford to start a new herd with Ashway Mary 7th a March 09 in calf heifer consigned by Geo Vellacott Dulverton Somerset and selling at £1680. Another first time buyer R E Richards from The Lizzard Cornwall took Frogmore Jesosheba 5th from J H Bowles Cullumpton Devon at £1596. Mr Richards bought 7 females to average £1176 including a maiden heifer from Stonegrove at £1197. Derek Mead and Co took advantage of being on home territory to secure 4 females on his first foray into the breed.
