Exmoor Farmers Livestock Auctions saw 1,582 head go under the hammer at Blackmoor Gate Market for the first of the autumn store lamb sales as the season gears up in readiness for the peak trading times ahead.
Store lambs forward sold strongly with a trade that strengthened to realise an average of £58.70 just £2.50 down on the same week last year. Top of the day was paid for a super run of lambs from Mr J Dunn, Middle Beccott which were well received by the contingent of buyers and reached a final call of £72.50.
Quality ewes were in short supply with 191 smaller hill breeds selling to an average of £46.30 and a top call of £66 for Mr RJ Burge, Haxton Down. A single Bluefaced Leicester 2T Breeding Ram was met with strong competition among buyers and soon reached a top call of £190 for Mr C Popham, Bashford Racing Stables.
A small entry of breeding ewes forward met with a mixed trade and the best sold for Mrs A Blay, Dean
Lodge for a price of £98.
