It was beginners luck for Texel shearling ram, Sportsmans Upper Class, who won the supreme champion title on his first ever outing.

He was homebred by owners Boden and Davies, Mellor, Stockport and shown by shepherd Mark Priestley, also making his debut in the show ring.

Sired by the 42,000gns Tolly Lagen Tonker, who was bought at Lanark in 2012 and out of a 6,000gns ewe from Carlisle, judge William Ingram said the resulting ram was a tremendous example of the breed.

“He has very correct legs, tremendous skin and conformation. When running out he also showed great character in the head,” he said.

The reserve championship went to W and J Thompson’s North Country Cheviot ewe.

Sired by a Sinton ram, she took the reserve interbreed title here in 2012 as a gimmer, and has since gone on to win reserve breed championships at Kelso and the Royal Highland.
