Vets say don’t panic over MRSA

THE BRITISH Veterinary Association has urged farmers not to panic over reports of the disease Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus arising in animals.

The MRSA bacterium, branded a superbug by the media, is normally associated with hospital patients.

But a study by vets has now revealed that the bug is also present in animals.

In an attempt to quell fears BVA president elect Freda Scott-Park played down concerns of animal to human transmission.

“The alarm being generated is completely unnecessary,” said Dr Scott-Park.

“It is important for people to realise that the incidence is still very, very low and those who undertake hygienic precautions are at minimal risk.”
