Highland cow tops £2,400 at United Auctions

A top price of £2,400 was paid at the May sale of pedigree and commercial Highland cattle at United Auctions in Stirling this week.

A total of 135 animals went under the hammer, including stock from Mr & Mrs John Mackie’s Merkland Fold dispersal.

And it was a seven year old cow from the Mackies which made the top price.  Duchess of Bien Esk was sired by Thorn of Bien Esk and was sold with a heifer calf at foot.  The buyers were Patricia Smith and Paul Burns, Craigengelt, Stirling.

The next leading price paid was £1,400 for a five year old cow also from the Mackies.  Eilidh of Glengarnock was sold with a heifer calf at foot.  The pair were purchased by DJ Welsh, West Broadmoss, Fenwick, Kilmarnock.

Bulls sold to £1,000 for Kelso 1st of Sauchie, a two year old consigned by Mr William Roddie, Sauchieburn Estate, Stirling.   Kelso was purchased by Patricia Smith and Paul Burns. 

Meanwhile the eight year old stock bull, Philip Ruadh of Tulloch Ard, from the Merkland fold made £960 and was purchased by Duncan McGregor Ltd, Burnhead, Queenzieburn, Kilsyth, Glasgow.  

Heifer calves sold to £420 twice, both coming from the Gilliesfaulds Fold based at Cupar, Fife and owned by T and N Gilmartin.

Simmental X Highland bulling heifers sold to £920 – North Balloch.

Shorthorn X Highland bulling heifers sold to £800 – Burnhead.

Shorthorn X Highland yearling heifers sold to £600 – Symington Mains.
