Jersey breed steals the lime light at Royal Ulster Fair

The 2012 Royal Ulster Winter Fair saw a record crowd and strong competition in the dairy classes.

And it was a successful day for the Jersey breed when judge Patrice Simard, Quebec, Canada awarded the supreme championship to Clandeboye Estate’s Clandeboye CR Evita, a three year old cow by the home-bred Clandeboye Rocket out of the well known Clandeboye Jazz Evita.

The Jersey breed also claimed an honourable mention in the interbreed championship with the Fleming Family’s Potterswalls Glams Elisha – a fresh heifer by Potterswalls Glams Comerica – which had earlier taken the reserve Jersey and interbreed heifer championships.

Holstein honours went to Sam and John McCormick with Hilltara Zenith Echo which also claimed the reserve interbreed championship and making it a clean sweep for exhibitor bred animals in the interbreed line-up.

The Dairy Shorthorn championship went to last year’s winner Lincool Heather 10 exhibited by Sunrise Shorthorns owned by Ashley Fleming and John Henning while top place in the Ayrshire breed was claimed by the McLean Family and Sydney Cromie with Atley Hill Yellow Pamela.  

The Winter Fair took place in the new Balmoral Pavilions – a 5,000 sq m exhibition facility erected at the Balmoral Showgrounds pending the RUAS’s move to Balmoral Park near Lisburn next year.
