English bull sale hits 6,500gns at Newark

A solid trade topped at 6,500gns at Newark’s English Premier sale last Saturday (12 March), which reported increasing quality on the year.

A Lincoln Red grabbed the headlines with the day’s top call going to February 2014-born Hemingby Jaguar from Michael Read’s Heminbgy herd, Lincolnshire, knocking down to Iken Hall Farms, Suffolk.

This Tapus Nova Scotia son is out of Hemingby Connie L519, herself a Market Stainton Goodman daughter, and boasts a beef value of +36 and is in the top 1 per cent of the breed.

Next for the breed at 3,000gns was Highbarn Thunderbolt from NJ Barton, Pott Shrigley, Cheshire. Entirely home-bred, the 2014-born son of Highbarn Percy is out of Highbarn Ruth R239 and was bought by B Parkinson, Louth.

Females peaked at 2,150gns for Walmer Nancy T1030 knocked down to ME Williams, Market Harborough. Out of Walmer Nance G78 and by Beverley Jaunty was bred by HM and JM, Ranby, Lincoln.

Aberdeen Angus

Prices hit 4,000gns for Aberdeen Angus with Herefordshire-bred bull Oakchurch Demond P179 from J and A Price, Staunton-on-wye. This Blelack Blackrod L774 son is out of Oakchurch Dimond L033, an Oakchurch Dominator G035 daughter and sold to WA Yeomans, Rinstead, Northamptonshire.

Next in the money at 2,900gns was Tree Bridge Emirate from D and P Evans, Nunthorpe, Middlesbrough, snapped up by Messrs Chandler, Long Clawson, Melton Mowbray. This son of Abberton Dazzle G160 is out of Tree Bridge Emily H205, a Chapelton Dark Mahmoud E826 daughter.

Angus females rose to 1400gns for St Fort Primrose May P416 for Andrew Mylius, Fife, selling to R and C Parker Farms, Lancashire. She has a self-replacing index of +45 and is by Rawburn Picasson L247 out of St Fort Primrose May H722, herself a Fordafourie Kris B300 daughter.

Simmental

Bidding twice managed 4000gns for Simmental bulls from the Burghbridge herd from CJG Clarke, Otley, Suffolk, both by Horsfordmanor Bonus 10.

The first at this money was September-2014 born Burghbridge Fleming with a TSI of +64 and a SRI of +70 out of Burghbridge Henrietta 3, heading to PJ Booth, Belper, Derbyshire.

A winning bid from RM and JE Brown, Wooton, Isle of Wight, then secured November 2014-born Burghbridge Figaro out of Burghbridge Emily 10 with a TSI of +70 and an SRI of +75.

The Browns then paid 3800gns for Grangewood Fortune from AS and YA Leedham, Netherseal, Derbyshire. This son of Omorgo Alonso is out of Grangewood Nanette 2.

Saler

A small Saler entry saw one bull, Seawell Jethrow, make £3150, This February 2014-born son of imported sire Cammel, out of Seawell Francesca was from the Donger family, Towcester, Northamptonshire.

The top Saler female, Manor Lane Freya, made 2300gns with a bull calf at foot from C Fox, Newark, selling to A Jones, Phwelli, Gwynedd. She was out of Manor Lane Jemma and by Ferdinand.
