Livestock 2012 – Bown family take Stockmanship top titles

The Bown family from Worcestershire will be celebrating tonight after a brother and sister took two of the top three placings in the Stockmanship Championships on the opening morning of Day Two at Livestock 2012.
Daniel Bown (16) took the Overall Stockmanship Championship collecting the Bill Wilson Memorial Trophy – presented by the Scottish Holstein Society – under the scrutiny of judge James Tomlinson of Bilsborrow, Lancashire. “He just did everything that was asked of him without fuss,” said mr Tomlinson.
Reserve Overall Stockman went to Amy Westwood (22) with Honourable Mention to Daniel’s sister, Hannah Bown (14). “Showmanship is a great discipline and shows what can be achieved when you put the effort in,” Mr Tomlinson told competitors.
Opening cattle classes on Day 2 of Livestock 2012 at the NEC, Birmingham, the Junior Class (under 12 on 01.01.12) saw Tanwen Cox (10) take first and Hannah Saxby (13) second place – both being praised for their head control of their respective calves.
In the Intermediate Class (13-15yrs on 01.01.12) Hannah Bown (14) took first praised for ‘understanding her calf so well’, Andrew Struthers (13) second, and Sophie Richards (15) third.
The larger Senior Class (16-20yrs on 01.01.12) saw Daniel Bown (16) take first praised for ‘doing such an outstanding job of following what he was asked to do without any fuss’. In second was Molly Westwood (21) and Claire Miles (19) in third. “All these Senior Stockmen deserved the round of applause they got,” declared Mr Tomlinson.
In the Mature Stockman Class (21-26yrs on 01.01.12) Amy Westwood (22) took first and was praised for ‘doing everything quickly and efficiently’ by Mr Tomlinson. Hannah Slack (21) took second and Emma Greenslade (22) took third.
