Meikle Laught dispersal tops £3,000

David Carson’s Meikle Laught herd, Saltcoats, Ayrshire was dispersed at Borderway, Carlisle on Wednesday 28 January in front of a huge crowd.  Health reasons had forced the sale of the farm and the milking herd.  Buyers watched the trade top at £3,000 with 55 animals selling to or above £1,500.

Topping the trade was a fresh second calved cow originating from the Lowmalzie herd of Andy McKay, Wigtownshire. Sired by Lynncrest Zebra and bred from a VG dam sired by Askew Reece, she traces back to an Excellent cow from the famous Grantchester herd.  Purchaser was G. McCulloch, Stranraer for £3,000.

Neighbouring Holehouse Farms, purchased young cow giving 37kgs for £2,100.  She calved in October 2014 and was due again this year in October to a British Blue.

Volume buyer Bakers Kington Farms, Somerset purchased a young Ayrshire cow for £2,000.  She calved in August and was due again this summer.

The quality of the cows were a credit to David, averaging just over 30kgs with a number of cows yielding over 50kgs. They were all in-calf to British Blue or Aberdeen Angus and displayed excellent fertility with many cows gaining time during each lactation.

Averages: 257 cows and heifers, £1205.12
