More sheep results from Royal Welsh

Sheep judging has been gathering pace throughout today at the Royal Welsh Show, with a number of the major breeds taking there turn in the judging rings.

Among the first to decide their champion today were the Beltex with David and Diane Findlay taking the breed championship with their homebred shearling ewe. This one is by Cookstown Jim and out of a homebred ewe and is one of 100 Beltex ewes run by the Findlay’s at home in Yorkshire. Reserve here went to Michael Owens’ shearling ram.

Among the Charollais it was a win for Charles Sercombe with his two shear ram Rockvilla Golden Promise from his Leicestershire-based flock. Golden Promise was bred in David Mawhinney’s Northern Irish flock and was purchased for 4000gns from the breed’s Worcester sale two years ago as a lamb and has already sired sons to 4000gns.

Taking the reserve award were Geoff Watson and Carol Grain with their aged ewe which took the female championship having stood as interbreed champion at the Great Yorkshire Show two weeks ago.

In the Oxford Downs James Hook capped a good week by picking up the breed championship with his homebred shearling ram by Hawsy Flynn and out of a homebred ewe.

Meanwhile in the Vendeens it was a win for Tim and Sue Butcher from East Sussex with their ram lamb which also stood breed and interbreed champion at this season’s South of England Show, Ardingly.

Leading the way in the Southdown classes was Welsh breeder Roland Williams with his Greenlands flock. Taking the championship was his homebred shearling ram which is an ET bred son of a homebred tup which is in turn by an East Dean sheep.
