Penwern Simmentals set new breed female record

Simmental breeders at Saturday’s production sale from the Penwern herd of Wynn Jenkins saw a new female breed record set when Penwern Norma, a December 2002-born daughter of Camus Brandy out of Annick Duchess 2, a Gretna House Fantastic daughter, sold at 20,500gns. She was bought by an undisclosed buyer and is likely to form the basis of a new Welsh herd. This one sold with an April born bull calf at foot.

Second best of the day was a 6800gns bid for the best of the maiden heifers Penwern Willow. This one is a Penwern Simon daughter out of another bought-in dam Celtic Madam, a Woodhall Dynamite daughter. She again sold to an undisclosed buyer, this time heading to Scotland.

Then at 6500gns was another of the cows, Penwern Tweedle-Dee, a May 2006-born daughter of Curlieu Kong out of Penwern Lucky, a Sacombe Wishful Thinking daughter. She had a March-born bull calf at foot and was bought by the same undisclosed buyer as the top priced cow.

Making 5000gns was calved heifer Penwern Virginia, this is an Omorga Prince daughter out of Pasturefields Mia, a Curlieu Kermit daughter. Selling with a January 2010-born heifer calf at foot she went to B L Jones, Abergele.

Then at 4500gns was another of the cows, Penwern Tonya, a February 2006-born Dinton Nautical daughter out of Penwern Primose, a Camus Brandy daughter. She went to Cennydd Iynon, Newcastle Emlyn, with a December 2009-born heifer calf at foot.

And making 3600gns was another of the calved heifers, Penwern Valerie. She is by Corrick Major and out of Penwern Hector Wilde, a Penwern Hector daughter. Buying this one were the George family, Cardigan.

Just shy of that at 3500gns was Penwern Vanessa. This March 2007-born Popes Laird daughter is out of Penwern Nelly, a Woodhall Extra Special daughter. Selling with an April-born bull calf at foot she went to the Evans family, Folva, for a new herd.

Then at 3400gns was Penwern Wonderlady, a Kilbride Farm Newry daughter out of Penwern Regina, a Curlieu Kong daughter. She sold to G and E Lloyd, Carmarthen.

Averages; 25 calved cows £3511,20, 12 calved heifers £2940, eight in-calf heifers £2047.50, 11 maiden heifers £2520, six bulls £2187.25 (Dai Lewis).
