New discussion group for Western poultry farmers

West Country poultry farmers are set to benefit from having their own discussion group by sharing tips and problems with experts on managing layers.

It follows the successful launch in recent years of the Midland Free Range Discussion Group near Shrewsbury and more recently, the Severn Valley Poultry Discussion Group near Ross on Wye.

The association is meeting for the first time on 11 February near Collumpton, Devon with three guest speakers. David Stevens from major egg packer Noble Foods will give a packer’s view of egg size while Steve Prichard from Premier Nutrition will outline how producer can control egg size by tweaking the diet. David Scott from Lohmann GB will shed light on rearing good pullets.

Stuart Young, chairman of group said: “Providing advice has always been a vital part of all of our jobs. It will be beneficial for everyone to share information to gain up to date knowledge. We have not ignored the social element by adopting the format of a dinner followed by a guest speaker, which will consequently enhance the enjoyment and productivity of the whole process.

Committee secretary Rachel Watkins added: “Farmers will meet both suppliers and industry experts. They can get the solutions to their problems in an informal atmosphere. Talking to our speakers will be fascinating and we have already got plans for other influential guest speakers in the future meeting’.

All the poultry producers are welcome. Tickets to attend the evening including dinner are free for the producers, as much of the cost is spared by the UK poultry trade. The places are limited and can be booked by calling Rachel Watkins on 07966 558 386.
