Win a £2,000 training grant to further poultry knowledge
Entries to the 2015 Zoetis/British Poultry Council Trainee of the Year award are now open, offering poultry producers a chance to win £2,000 towards professional development.
The winner will also receive a £500 cash prize from Poultry World, and the opportunity to collect their award from the BPC Awards, held in the Houses of Parliament in December.
Industry training bodies say a broad range of educational initiatives now appear to be attracting new entrants into the sector.
Training organisations report seeing a steady flow of new entrants into the poultry industry, while over the past two years the Edge Apprenticeships in Food and Farming project has increased awareness of opportunities in East Anglia and is now seeking to extend its reach beyond the region.

“Employers are asking us to find apprentices, not just the larger organisations, but increasingly smaller firms and independent producers, sometimes with the accommodation provided,” said Nathan Raynes, associate director of training business Poultec.
“The Zoetis/BPC award has played a role in highlighting how talented, keen young people can progress in the industry – and that’s the message we need to keep getting across to schools and parents across the country.”
Recognising talent
James Porritt, Zoetis poultry manager in the UK and Ireland, points to the wide range of opportunities offered by the poultry industry today.
“As well as roles in farm management, there are many other career avenues in research and development, animal health and welfare, nutrition and laboratory science, with tremendous opportunity for advancement in the UK and even on a global scale,” he said.
The award offers a £2,000 grant from Zoetis to enhance professional knowledge and skills, a £500 prize from Poultry World and the chance to attend the award ceremony at the House of Commons. Entries must be in by Friday 18 September.
