Round up of pedigree sheep trade at Carlisle

Dorset Horn rams sold to 1,200gns twice at Borderway Mart last week (28 August).

First to go under the hammer was the ram lamb Ballytaggart Whizz-Kid from Thomas Wright, Ballymoney, Co Antrim. Sired by Ballytaggart Uppercut U52 he us out of a homebred dam. Buyer was S Driver, Chisworth, Derbyshire.

Next at this money was Pembroke Warburton, from D Lewis, Narberth, Pembrokeshire. He is the last lamb by Kildowney Nelson and is out of a ewe by Downkillybegs Picasso. He was bought by Smallburn Farms, Elgin, Morayshire.

Next best came of bid of 650gns from Wantsdon Hall Farms, Suffolk, for Sandy Lane Wolf W2358 from Sam Driver, Glossop, Derbyshire. He is the first son of the Poorton U8 to be offered for sale.

Topping female trade at 900gns was the shearling gimmer Huish U6022 from DW Rossiter, Kingsbridge, Devon. Sired by Downkillybegs Humdinger C3-H8 she is out of a Huish dam. She sold having been scanned carrying triplets to Granagh Nightrider N39.

Averages: 14 lamb rams, ÂŁ60.50; three shearling rams, ÂŁ315; 10 shearling gimmers, ÂŁ437.85; two aged ewes, ÂŁ210; one pen of females, ÂŁ227.63.

 

Berrichons

Trade topped 1600gns for a ram lamb at the Berrichon society sale, Borderway Mart, this week (28 August).

Sale leader was the pre-sale show reserve males and reserve supreme champion Galtres Pioneer from Deborah Whitcher, Skewsby, York. Buyer was Messrs Cockbain and Sons, Keswick, Cumbria.

Messrs Curry, Morpeth, Northumberland, paid 1,300gns for the second prize shearling ram Newark Optimist from Frances Barbour, Sanquhar, Dumfries.

Leading female trade at 1400gns was a shearling gimmer by Lionheart from Messrs Cockbain and Sons, Keswick, Cumbria. She sold having been served to Lorenzo. Buyer was Marshland Berrichon, St Clears.

Averages: 28 shearling rams, ÂŁ501.38; 35 ram lambs, ÂŁ484.80; 16 shearling gimmers, ÂŁ460.69; 18 ewe lambs, ÂŁ397.83.

Charollais

Meanwhile Charollais rams sold to 640gns for a shearling ram from CW Marwood and Son, Whenby, York.

Sale leader was his second prize Flourice 14DG04680 sired by Lowerye Neil’s Favourite and out of a homebred dam. Buyer was GA and JM Maw and Son, Hexham, Northumberland.

Two ram lambs made 600gns. First at this money Kirkhouse 15XNK01548 sired by Kirkhouse Optimus from D and J Norman, Cockermouth, Cumbria. Buyer was J Stott, Kendal, Cumbria.

Another Kirkhouse Optimus sired lamb from the same home also sold for 600gns to Webster Smith, Dundee, Angus.
