Shorthorn bullock sells for £1,280 at Caithness

Champion in the April store cattle show and sale held by Aberdeen and Northern Marts at the Caithness Livestock centre at Quoybrae was a 502kg Shorthorn bullock from A and M Green, Roadside, Gills, Canisbay, which sold for £1,280 to the show judge Bill Cameron, Burnside of Edingight, Grange, Keith, Banffshire.

In the native breed section the top gross price pen of Aberdeen Angus was £1,365 for three 625kg bullocks from W Macdonald, Blackpark, Watten and top price a kg 224.9p for four 418kg bullocks from Messrs Anderson, Thurso East. Top gross price and top price a kg for Shorthorns was £920, 232.9p for three 395kg heifers from J M Simpson and Co, Freswick Mains, Wick. Top gross price and top price a kg of other native breeds was £830, 202p for two Luing heifers from J and C Grant, Swiney Hill, Lybster.

A total of 994 cattle were sold with 580 bullocks averaging 232.6p per kg and selling to £1,790 gross, while 414 heifers averaged 218.6p per kg and sold to £1,419 gross.
