Southdown rams top 650gns at Worcester

The Southdown Sheep Society’s Annual Show and Sale at Worcester recorded a keen and close following for females but a shearling ram carrying strong New Zealand genetics found favour with buyers and topped at 650gns. The ram by Tralee through imported semen from PA and RA Whitcomb’s Southern Cross flock was secured by G Lloyd Hughes, Aberystwyth, Ceredigion.

Messrs Whitcombe were well followed throughout and sold a fifth prize winning shearling ram at 410gns to Maurice Trumper, Abergavenny, Gwent and the reserve overall champion at 380gns to MJ Moore, Brackley, Northants.

Females were a constant level trade peaking at 270gns (x2)for two shearling ewes from A Bulmer’s Habton flock and M and S Paterson’s Broadstone flock both ewes being taken by a strong supporter at the sale Maurice Trumper, Abergavenny, Gwent. Mr Trumper took a total of 6 sheep at the sale including another shearling ewe at 250gns, a first prize winner from Gay Hargreaves-Jones Wigginton flock.

Ewe lambs enjoyed a close following selling up to 180gns for another first prize winner from the Wiggington flock to M. Wallace, Buckfastleigh, Devon.
