Spring lambs at Kington sell to better trade

A good entry of 1750 spring lambs were reported at Kington market, which sold to a better trade than earlier in the week.

All the lambs averaged 2.02p/kg up to 2.07p/kg.

Lambs between 32kg and 39kg averaged 1.99p/kg up to 2.04p/kg

Lambs between 39.5kg and 45.5kg averaged 2.02p/kg up to 2.07p/kg

Lambs between 46kg and 52kg averaged 198p/kg up to 2.06p/kg

The heavier lambs over 45kg were in real demand again with some 50kg lambs from Morgan and Co which making £99.

All lambs sold to an unexpected good trade. Auctioneers report the supply of lambs to be under pressure due to the excessive wet period and farmers are finding it difficult to fatten their lambs off grass alone. Meated lambs sold to premium prices.

Some 38kg lambs from D Bedford made £78, 39kg lambs from B A Morgan made £39, 40kg lambs from P J G Dobbs made £82, 42kg lambs from J R and H A Wiliams made £86.10, 44kg lambs from S C and G S Stell made £90.20, 45kg lambs from J E Gwatkin and Son made £90.30, 47kg lambs from S C and G S Stell made £96.80, 49 kg lambs from J T Davies and Son made £97.

There was another small entry of end of season hoggets which sold to a good trade and averaged 1.35p/kg to include hoggets with teeth up.

There was a good entry of 350 cull ewes selling to another good trade, which would be dearer than last week with buyers requiring stock for the forth coming ethnic festival. The buyers are requiring leaner ewes which sold to premium prices. The ewes sold to a top of £138.50 for some Texel x ewes from B W Speakman and Son and all the ewes averaged an excellent £86.40 per head with many hill ewes forward. Tups sold to a good trade with a top of £90 and to average £82 per head. The cull ewes included a large proportion of thinner mule ewes and smaller hill ewes.
