Texel walks home with championship title at Gilsland Show
A homebred Texel gimmer shearling walked home with the champion of champions title at the 99th Annual Gilsland Agricultural Show at the weekend.
Sunday’s warm weather was a welcome relief following last year’s wet weather which saw the show rained off.
Taking the day’s top honours was Messrs Woodmass of Harene, Linstock, with their gimmer sired by Farmhill Superstar and out of a ewe by Annan Original.
Judge Frank Forster of Sorbie Nook, Lilliesleaf awarded his reserve champion of champions title to a Galloway cow from Hunter Smith who farms at Wiley Syke, Gilsland and also at The Spittal of Glenshee.
There was a record entry of 80 single mule gimmer lambs forward across the swaledale cross and blackface cross classes. The eventual champion mule was awarded to John and Mandy Smith-Jackson of Hightown, Melkridge.
