Traditional breeds in demand at Worcester sale

The Tradition Breeds Sale as part of the weekly market at Worcester enjoyed a very strong following and a packed ringside resulting in a very hotly contested demand particularly for the quality types.

Longhorns held poll position not only starting the sale but recording the top price of the day at 2,000gns for Trelawnley Icarus a four year old bull by Wellhead Cognac out of a Parc Grace Dieu bred dam from David Nutt’s Buckinghamshire based herd. The bull was secured by A L Riseborough, Raglan, Monmouth. David Nutt also had success with a cow bred by Peter Close Fishwick Helio she was 4 months in calf to the 2,000gns Trelawney Icarus and levelled at 1,200gns.

Two unserved heifers from Messrs Bayley’s Courthayes herd enjoyed a close following both by Blackbrook Quintessential, a Junior Champion from the 2007 East of England Show and both sold at 1,180gns to G Hedges, Midgham, Berkshire and G V P Ltd, Tetbury, Glos. respectively.

Devon cattle had a good cross section of support for both cows and heifers with cows and calves both from Brown and Geddes peaking at 1,200gns for a six year old cow with steer calf and a four year old cow with steer calf to R H Ward and Son, Burton on Trent, Staffs and V and M Grubb, Bucknell, Shropshire respectively.

Served heifers enjoyed a sharp and competitive demand topping in that section at 1,180gns for Tilbrook Gem 5th from Gavin Hunter’s Cambridge based herd taken by J Colley, Bewdley, Worcester.

Unserved heifers took a strong hold from a flurry of bidders hitting the 800gns barrier from Davina Stanhope with a homebred heifer Tingewick Nora 5th by Hansnett Beau Trespasser 2nd to S Linton, Bodenham, Hereford.

British Whites also found strong favour with buyers with cows and calves peaking at 1,040gns for Latchygors Tealeaf with bull calf from P Scholfield selling to S D Pennington, Bridgnorth, Shropshire.

Maiden heifers were particularly well sold with Ladbarrow Celestine by Albany Top Cat from Simon Willes heading the section at 850gns also to S D Pennington.
