Well meated hoggs and lambs sell well at Kington

McCartney’s of Kington report a strong home and export trade for hoggets with plenty of demand.

Thursday’s sale of 1,550 hoggets displayed a significant difference in the trade between well meated and half meated hoggets. McCartney’s said it is well worth selecting well meated animals to achieve the premium prices.

The top price hogget’s were £113.50 a head for some 56kg hoggets from AL Morgan. All hoggets forward averaged 2.11p/kg up to 2.43p/kg.

The level of meat on the lambs again dictated the trade in the spring lambs. The 405 forward averaged £261.5p/kg and up to 2.72p/kg. All lambs averaged £104 a head.

There was a good entry for the day of 298 cull ewes selling to a good trade which would have increased over the past week with less numbers being marketed. Again, well meated ewes sold to a significant premium.

The ewes sold to a top of £105 for some Texel x ewes from EJW & ME Griffiths and all the ewes averaged £71.50 a head with many hill and thin ewes forward. Tups and weathers sold to £103 and averaged £87. The cull ewes included a large proportion of thinner mule ewes and smaller hill ewes.
