Latest Isuzu D-Max gets bigger engine and slicker transmission

A long-awaited engine upgrade has been introduced for the Isuzu D-Max that promises to improve acceleration and pulling power.

The new 2.2-litre power plant puts out a healthy 400Nm of torque – up 40Nm on its 1.9-litre predecessor – which should make it quicker off the mark and boost towing performance.

However, the extra displacement has failed to unleash any extra horsepower, with it still delivering a maximum output of 164hp.

As before, buyers get the option of a manual or automatic transmission.

The former retains its six-speed format, but the latter has gained two extra ratios to give a total of eight gears.

This, along with the torque boost, should make the truck considerably more responsive.

Other updates include a driver monitoring system fitted as standard throughout the line-up and a 360deg camera on DL40 and V-Cross models.

The updated D-Max will be available in double cab, extended cab and single cab body styles, all of which have a 3.5t towing capacity and can carry a 1t payload.

There’s also now the option of buying extended cab models in a plusher DL40 spec.

And the chance to specify low rolling resistance Dunlop tyres that help improve fuel economy.

The 2.2-litre D-Max is available to pre-order now, with deliveries due from July. Prices start at ÂŁ33,495.
