Cereals 2021: Brock monster 12m Campaign drill

A 12m version of J Brock and Sons’ Campaign drill was the main talking point on the Essex-based dealer’s Cereals stand.

And with a whopping 13.35m version designed for those on 40m controlled-traffic systems currently in the build process, it takes the firm’s drill range to six (6m, 8m, 9m, 10m, 12m and 13.35m).

The models, which are all trailed, are claimed to be comfortable working into any seed-bed and can cope with relatively sticky conditions, as there is no full-width bank of packing/transport wheels that would otherwise be liable to bung-ups.

Instead, it rides on two large 800/45 R26.5 flotation tyres, and each of the three sections is fitted with an additional guide wheel to help maintain a consistent sowing depth.

The non-pressurised 7,000-litre hopper is mounted at the front of the drill on a narrow chassis, with the seeding deck at the rear. The three sections are controlled by separate metering units below the hopper, which can be switched off automatically via GPS.

The distribution heads have been redesigned so the pipes slope straight down to the coulters, rather than coming out the side as before. This helps with seed flow to the outermost coulters and simplifies the folding process for road transport.

Narrow 12mm points are available, but the coffin-shaped point, which is tapered to about 10mm at the base, is by far the most popular, says Brock. Each tine is sprung loaded to absorb any shock loads when drilling into stony soil.

Depth is set by manual pin adjustment on the main seeding frame behind the wheels, and pressure can be added to the wings to increase downforce.

A 12m model with a single hopper has a £150,000 list price. Opting for a 10,500-litre split seed and fertiliser tank increases the price to £170,000.
