A divided tank that enables simultaneous sowing of seed and fertiliser is one of several new options for Pottinger’s Aerosem M pneumatic piggyback drill.

Available in 3m, 3.5m and 4m sizes, all with a regular single-product hopper of 1,250-litre capacity expandable to 1,850 litres, the “M” is designed for combi drilling, in partnership with a Pottinger power harrow to complete seed-bed preparation and sowing in one pass.

Unusually, the machine can also be had with an alternative hopper and seed metering elements for planting maize without hampering its grain and rapeseed sowing capability – an interesting option for dairy farms growing forage maize.

Fertiliser can be placed either side of each maize row and, for more consistent plant spacing, Pottinger has revised the drill’s standard twin-disc coulter assembly – now with up to 60kg down pressure – to discourage seed from rolling upon exiting the seed tube.

Farms in Scotland were primarily in mind when Pottinger engineers devised the new the split-tank option because of a tendency to include some nitrogen fertiliser with the grain to give crops a prompt nutrient boost.

The 2,000-litre pressurised unit can also be used for sowing a companion to the principal crop.

In addition, Pottinger’s Tegosem 200 small-seed hopper and metering system is now available for the Aerosem M, so in combination with the new divided hopper, up to three components can be sown at once.
