Sky Agriculture has created a new tine seeder for sowing into stony and very dry soils by equipping its Methys PCS cultivator with a seed distribution system and new slimline knife coulters.

Designed for operation behind the firm’s tractor front-mounted Progress TF twin-product hopper, the implement has been conceived quickly as an option for growers to establish cover crops in very dry ground brought about by this year’s lack of summer rainfall.

In standard form, the Methys PCS “precision” cultivator comes in 3m to 8m trailed sizes with multiple support wheels enabling winged points on spring tines to work shallow – from as little as 20mm.

The broad “ducksfoot” points are used to cut through the root zone of stubble, crop regrowth and weeds across the full working width without gaps.

For the drilling conversion, Sky has called on tine and coulter specialist JJ Metcalfe for a set of 12mm-wide seeding tines, carbide-reinforced for maximum durability across all soil types.

Adjustable delivery tubes place the seed as close as possible to the furrow base while maintaining the implement’s ability to handle challenging conditions without blocking, says Sky.

With 711mm of underbeam clearance and four rows of tines, this sowing setup is reckoned to have plenty of room to work through surface material with minimal risk of bunging up.

Sky is building 4m and 6m versions to partner its Progress TF hopper, which comes in a single size of 2,200 litres with two compartments for seed-only sowing or separately metered seed and fertiliser.

One or two 100-litre hoppers can be added for complementary crop seed, control is through an isobus terminal, and central support/packer wheels are available.
