ScotGrass: Kuhn’s 14.5m plain mowers cover acres quickly

The first of Kuhn’s gargantuan GMD 15030 plain mowers has hit UK shores and was busy devouring sizeable chunks of the ScotGrass demo area.

Armed with four 3.1m Opti-disc Elite beds and another 3.1m unit up front, it can knock down 14.5m in a single pass – a feat which Kuhn claims makes it the largest mounted mower in the world.

Achieving this while having the beds tuck in to less than 3m wide and 4m tall for transport has called for some nifty engineering jobs.

Chief among them is a new folding frame with custom gearboxes at the end of each wing. These send drive to both mower beds and are hinged so that the two decks can articulate as they pass over undulations.

They also allow the outside unit to flip on top of the inner one during the folding sequence.

Dual break-back systems have been incorporated too, which give protection against collisions when going forwards and backwards.

The lack of conditioners means the power requirement is fairly modest.

However, as the outfit weighs 3.8t and has such a large wingspan, Kuhn recommends teaming it with a tractor of at least 250hp.

The machine is hitting the demo circuit this season with deliveries slated for next year.
