ACCS set to top 4000 target
REGISTRATIONS for the Assured Combinable Crops Scheme for England and Wales are well on course to top the Feb 28 target of 4000.
"Cheques have been flooding in. About a thousand came in over the weekend and are just sitting here waiting to be sorted."
Uptake at the outset was slow, admitted Mr Young. But recent days have seen a flood of registrations. "Its amazing – like so many things in farming, as the deadline looms closer farmers are getting down to filling the forms in. Its just like IACS."
At the last count, on Wed, Feb 18, 2m tonnes of grain were committed to the scheme.
Late last week requests for registration packs outstripped supply. But growers will not be disadvantaged, Mr Young stressed. "More have been printed and growers should return applications as soon as possible. Where records show packs were delayed we will take a sympathetic line regarding the two harvests offer."
• Target of 4000 farms signed up by end-Feb probably exceeded already.
• More than 2m tonnes of combinable crops represented.
• Late applications to be considered sympathetically.
