Ainsworth set for Tory conference
By Isabel Davies
PETER AINSWORTH will address the Conservative Party at its conference next week for the first time since becoming shadow Rural Affairs Secretary.
The conference, which has a shortened programme due to the “war against terrorism”, will run from Monday to Wednesday (8-10 October).
Mr Ainsworth is expected to address delegates at the Blackpool conference centre some time on Tuesday (9 October).
He will be joined by his deputy, Ann Winterton MP, who will make a short address on the crisis facing Britains farms, said a party spokeswoman.
As well as speeches and debates in the main conference hall, there is likely to be plenty of discussion about the future of farming in fringe meetings.
The RSPCA will host a meeting on Monday (8 October) to examine what lessons can be learned on farm animal welfare following foot-and-mouth.
The National Farmers Union will debate how farming can be profitable while achieving the governments vision of also being sustainable.
The Country Land and Business Association will discuss the recovery of rural businesses at a meeting on Tuesday (9 October).
Mr Ainsworth will hopefully address both the NFU and CLA meetings.
Iain Duncan Smith, the new Tory leader, is expected to conclude the conference with a speech at lunchtime on Wednesday (10 October).
Full coverage of all farming-related events will be on FWi.
